Dr. Belkis Suarez, the Mount Mercy Spanish professor, and two of her students, Tyler Hartley and Danny Wayson, stopped by my 8 a.m. class this morning, trying to sell Spanish.

MMU has a fairly young Spanish minor program, and Audrey and I (we teach portal, or freshman introduction, classes at the same time) are having students study the MMU curriculum,  While this morning’s presentation was intended to make all students aware of the Spanish program, it if into our larger plan to get first-year students to think about minors.

Anyway, the students and Dr. Belkis did a very nice presentation, I thought. After they left, we asked our two classes to name the minor that each student would be most interested in, and “Spanish” seemed a popular answer.

I hope so. As Dr. Belkis pointed out, studying a second language has all sorts of cognitive benefits. Plus, you get to learn a second language. Es todo bien.
